Government Agencies Working in the area of Conservation of Cultural Property in India
During the colonial rule in India, the then administration was impressed by India's rich cultural heritage and its state of affair in the hands of innocent mass, took steps to preserve this Heritage by establishing
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and appointing Director-General. Thanks to the interest envisaged by the enlightened officers, not only the survey was taken up but also efforts were made to conserve. This is evident in the Annual reports of ASI published
since 1902.
After the independence, the work continued and ASI remained a premier
organization of Conservation of Cultural Property. It has branched out to various circles. Apart from undertaking the conservation activity, it promotes dissemination of information
through its publications, Seminars etc.
The National Museum Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Museology came into
existence in 1983 and now is Deemed to be a University provides various Courses with its campus at National
Museum New Delhi).
The National Research Laboratory for Conservation of Cultural Property (NRLC) is a scientific institution of the Department of Culture, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. NRLC was established in 1976 to give a scientific footing
to the conservation of cultural property in the country. In its formative stages, the NRLC was developed with monetary and technical assistance from the UNDP and UNESCO, and now it is an Associate Member of the Rome based International Centre for the Study of the
Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM).
The National Archives of India is the repository of the non-current records of the Government of India and is holding them in trust for the use of administrators and scholars. It is an Attached Office of the Department of Culture under Ministry of
Tourism & Culture. It was set up in March 1891 in Calcutta (Kolkata) as the Imperial Record Department and subsequent to the transfer of the National Capital from Calcutta to New Delhi in 1911 it was shifted to its present building in 1926.
Delhi Institute of Heritage Research & Management (DIHRM), established by the Govt. of NCT of Delhi and affiliated to the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha Vishwavidyalaya, is a unique institution in India devoted to study, conservation and
preservation of the heritage. Archaeological monuments, arts and crafts, oral and written literature, living tradition, natural features and environment are all part of our heritage.
The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, established in memory of Smt. Indira Gandhi, is visualised as a centre encompassing the study and experience of all the arts -- each form with its own integrity, yet within a dimension of mutual
interdependence, interrelated with nature, social structure and cosmology.
Inaugurated on March 29, 1954, The National Gallery of Modern Art is the only institution of it's kind in India, run and administered by the Government of India. It represents the evolution of the changing art forms through the passage of the last more
than hundred years starting from about 1857. The foremost responsibility of the National Gallery of Modern Art is to ensure quality and to set and maintain a standard of excellence that pervades all it's activities.
The Museum Directorate has seven co-coordinating service units such as Preservation, Publication, Photography, Presentation, Modeling, Education and Library. Indian Museum is an autonomous institution fully funded by the Department of Culture, Government
of India.
The Victoria Memorial Hall was opened in 1921. It is also a museum where people could see before them pictures and statues of men who played a prominent part in the history of India and develop a pride in their past especially in relation to the history
of Calcutta . Lord Curzon conceived it. Presently it is the finest and most prominent building and art museum of Calcutta, India, under the Department of Culture, Government of India.
One of the basic functions of the National Library is to conserve the printed heritage to the future generations. For this purpose the library has separate divisions for physical, chemical, reprographic and digital conservations
Khuda Bux Oriental Public Library, Patna.-The Library is being administered by a Board of Management set up by the State Government of Bihar in consultation with the Government of India.
In view of the importance, antiquity and value of manuscripts. and books in the Khuda Bux Oriental Public Library, it is necessary to reorganize and develop the Library on modern scientific lines by declaring it institution of national importance under an Act
of Parliament. It is proposed to introduce a Bill of Legislation in this behalf in the Parliament shortly. For the maintenance of the Library, a grant of Rs. 20,000 has been released to the Board of Management up to 31st December, 1964. Further grants will be released
according to the actual requirements.
One of the foremost activities of the Laboratory is to conduct research in conservation and materials of the past. In the beginning much research was conducted by Dr. S. Paramasivan, the first Curator of the Laboratory, on paintings and metallic
antiquities. The research findings were published in leading scientific journals both in India and abroad. The research activities continued successfully by the Curators of the Laboratory till date. At present research projects such as Fingerprinting of South Indian
Bronze Icons, Holographying Museum Antiquities, Survey of Monuments in Tamil Nadu, Conservation of Metallic Antiquities etc. are under progress.

Baroda Museum and Art Gallery. The Museum has a good collection of artifacts, which not only includes Indian sculptures and ancient manuscripts, but also houses collection of Egyptian antiquities, while the art gallery has Mughal miniatures and some
works of European masters.
The Prince of Wales Museum of Western India is one of the best-known Museums of the Country. This magnificent heritage building, situated on the famous 'Crescent Site' on the way to the Gateway of India, is a landmark of south Mumbai. Architecturally it
is an exquisite example of the Indo-Saracenic style, popular in India during the early part of this century. It was designed as a museum by the architect George Wittet in 1909. It was opened for public in 1922 mainly with the collections acquired by the Trustees and the
Sir Ratan Tata bequest. The collections have swelled since then and today the museum has expanded into various sections, including the Maritime Heritage gallery, the first of its kind in India.

Situated on the southern bank of the river Musi, the Salarjung Museum is the third largest museum in India housing the biggest one-man collections of antiques in the world. It is well known throughout India for its prized collections belonging to
different civilizations dating back to the 1st century. Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III (1889-1949), former Prime Minister of the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, spent a substantial amount of his income over thirty five years to make this priceless collection, his
life's passion. The collections left behind in his ancestral palace, 'Diwan Deodi' were formerly exhibited there as a private museum which was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951. Later in 1968, the museum shifted to its present location at Afzalgunj and is
administered by a Board of Trustees with the Governor of Andhra Pradesh as ex-officio chairperson under the Salar Jung Museum Act of 1961.
As per the definition, the Bharat Kala Bhavan extends all possible facilities to the students, research scholars, alumnus and teachers in their higher education and research and provides source materials contained herein.

Thanjavur Maharaja Serfoji’s Saraswati Mahal Library

The Tanjore Maharaja Serfoji's Sarasvati Mahal Library Must have had its earliest beginnings about the end of the 16th century when Tanjore was under the rule of the Telugu Nayaka who collected Sanskrit
Manuscripts written in Telugu character. In the 17th
century the Maharathas conquered the country and since that day, the Library has been increasing. By far the greater portion of the collection was made by Serfoji, during a visit to Benares during 1820-1830. Shivaji his successor added a few. There has practically been
no addition of any value till very recent times.
