Indian Heritage Sites From The World Heritage
List As India has a long history, it has world's highest number of heritage sites. It is a stupendous and challenging task to keep all the sites in mind. There are about 5000 reported sites under Archeological Survey of India and State Archeology departments have their own protected site as per existing Art and Antiquity Act of 1972 amended in 2000. Recognizing the importance of these heritage sites, Unesco has declared the following 19 archeological sites as world heritage sites. Of course there are 5 sites too in the Unesco list which are of not our immediate interest. World Heritage Committee has
inscribed on the World Heritage List, 754 properties (582 cultural, 149 natural
and 23 mixed properties in 128 States. Of which 19 cultural, 5 natural
properties are from the Waste Indian heritage.
